Course Registration

Preferred Course Listing

KU offers a pre-registration period, or preferred course listing (2/2 to 2/5), which was something that I was quite new to. This allows students to create a stimulated course timetable before official course registration starts.

At KU, each course has a quota for each student grade level. For exchange students, the acceptance rate is usually 15% of the total. During the preferred course listing, I was able to add and prioritize courses that I wanted. I advise taking a look at the course equivalency list on Shidler's site and making a list of courses you want to register for. It's also always good to have some back-up courses just in case you aren't able to get certain courses.

If you pre-register for a course that has already exceeded the quota for exchange students, only 20% of the students will be selected through a priority-based lottery system. You will see the results on the course registration site a few days later. If you don't get the class, you can also try during the actual course registration period. KU also sends a comprehensive guide on how preferred course listing works, so don't worry too much if you're a little confused while reading this.

Course Registration Advice
  1. During preferred course listing, make sure to actually review each course's syllabus before pre-registering. I noticed that majority of the business courses I was interested in required group presentations, so in order to not overload myself with presentations during the semester, I looked for a professor within that course who did not include presentations in their course layout. That was just an example of how you might be able to narrow down your choices to better suit your schedule and preferences.

  2. Remember to look out for (English) in parentheses next the course title, which indicates that the course will be taught in English.

  3. Business courses are especially competitive, so be sure to have reminders set for when course registration opens! I also used a website called https://time.navyism.com/, which works as a countdown timer to when registration starts. I used this advice from JJ, a fellow Freeman Scholar who attended KU. His blog is super helpful and detailed, so I recommend checking his site out!

  4. Unfortunately, I could only register for three out of the four classes that I wanted. I mainly think it was because I slightly hesitated on which course I wanted, and by the time I decided, the quota had already been exceeded. Therefore, it is best to have a solid idea on the courses you plan to register for.
